Why it matters

Average order value is a core ecommerce and sales metric because it reveals whether growth is coming from more buyers, larger baskets, or both.

When to use

  • Assessing bundle or upsell experiments
  • Reviewing channel quality
  • Planning revenue targets from traffic and conversion assumptions

Inputs & Outputs

Inputs

  • Total revenue is the completed order revenue for the chosen period.
  • Total orders is the number of completed transactions in the same period.

Outputs

  • Average order value shows the average revenue generated per order.
  • Revenue per 100 orders gives a useful scaled benchmark for planning.

AOV formula

Divide total revenue by total orders. The result is the average amount collected every time an order is placed.

Average order value = total revenue / total orders

Worked example

1

Promotion review

A store booked 96,000 across 1,200 completed orders.

Inputs

  • Revenue: 96,000
  • Orders: 1,200

Steps

  • AOV = 96,000 / 1,200 = 80

Result

  • Average order value is 80.

Edge cases & caveats

  • Refunds and cancellations can distort AOV if they are not treated consistently.
  • High AOV does not always mean high profitability if fulfillment costs rise with basket size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should AOV use gross or net revenue?

Use the revenue definition you rely on operationally, but stay consistent. Net revenue is often better for comparing periods with different refund behavior.

Can AOV go up while revenue falls?

Yes. If order count drops faster than revenue, AOV can increase even while the business shrinks overall.
